How to Find and Use LinkedIn’s “Catch Up” Feature

If you’ve been on LinkedIn for a while, you may remember the days when job changes, work anniversaries, and birthdays would show up right in your main feed and notifications tab. But as LinkedIn has evolved, those updates have found a new home—one that you might have overlooked.

Enter LinkedIn’s “Catch Up” feature—a simple but powerful area of the platform that helps you stay engaged with your network by showing key milestones like job changes, promotions, work anniversaries, and education updates.

Why does this matter? Relationships grow when you acknowledge and celebrate the milestones of the people in your network. The Catch Up feature makes it easy to spark meaningful conversations, reconnect with connections who may have fallen off your radar, and strengthen relationships without sifting through endless posts.

Where to Find LinkedIn’s "Catch Up" Feature

If you’ve been wondering where these updates went, here’s how to find them:

  • Go to the "My Network" Tab
    • On LinkedIn’s homepage (desktop or mobile), click or tap on “My Network” in the top menu
  • Find the "Catch Up" Tab
    • At the top beside “Grow” (where your pending invitations can be found), see “Catch Up”
  • Engage Directly from Catch Up
    • From here, you can leave a comment on a public post and direct message your connection

4 Ways to Use the Catch Up Feature Effectively

Now that you know where to find it, let’s talk about how to make the most of it. Here are a few strategies:

1. Use Catch Up as a Consistent Touchpoint

  • Make it a habit to check your Catch Up tab once a week (or daily if you have a large network), then take action

2. Go Beyond Generic Messages

  • Instead of just clicking the “Say Congrats” button, personalize your direct message. Example:
    • “Hey [Name], I saw you started a new role at [Company]! How’s the transition going? Would love to hear more about it.”
  • This small and effective tweak makes the interaction feel more authentic and engaging

3. Use It as a Natural Networking Tool

  • If a former colleague gets promoted or moves to a new company, consider this an opportunity to reconnect:
    • “Hey [Name], congrats on the new role! We haven’t caught up in a while! Let’s schedule a quick chat to hear about your new adventure. How does next Tuesday look for you?”
  • You never know where these conversations might lead—new partnerships, new clients, and new referrals

4. Take It Beyond LinkedIn

  • If someone in your close network has a major career change, remember your outreach can (and should!) go beyond LinkedIn–send a text, email, or mail a handwritten note to stand out

Why You Should Be Using "Catch Up"

In a world where digital interactions can feel transactional, staying relationally connected is more important than ever. The Catch Up feature isn’t just about acknowledging milestones—it’s about fostering real relationships with the people in your network. Whether you’re in sales, recruiting, operating your own business, or just want to strengthen your professional relationships, small, consistent touchpoints lead to bigger opportunities.

Your network is one of your greatest professional assets. Taking a few minutes to engage through Catch Up can help turn passive connections into meaningful relationships—the kind that open doors, lead to referrals, and create lasting professional friendships.

Make it a habit to check in, reach out, and stay connected. It’s not just good networking—it’s good business.
